Emergency Management

Client: Oregon Health & Science University
Business Issue

In critical response situations like earthquakes, fire, accidents, epidemics and other emergencies, hospitals must be prepared to handle an influx of patients and the possibility that employees cannot report to work. A major trauma center supporting over two million residents needed to develop response plans to ensure it is prepared to support its constituents.

Challenge

Drills are conducted several times per year but not all employees are able to participate in those exercises. Each employee must know what to expect, what their role is, proper communication and response plans and how to support the mental health needs of affected individuals.

Solution

Planet created an e-learning program that instructs learners in the various types of emergencies that may affect the center, correct procedures to follow in the event of an emergency, what resources are available, how to care for others, care for themselves, prepare their families and how to support special needs populations like the elderly children and physically disabled citizens, non-English speakers.

The program included quiz questions with feedback to ensure that each employee understands how to respond in an emergency and where to go for additional information.

Results

The program is being launched enterprise-wide and will be required on an annual basis. “Planet was able to successfully work with multiple stakeholders throughout the hospital system and ensured that project milestones were met as we needed. The program’s rich graphics, easy navigation and instructional development process made it a pleasure to work with them.” We are very pleased with the way Planet presented the information in a graphically rich and instructionally sound manner.”
